Mortar Shell launching attacks
A mortar shell is a high-trajectory weapon with a shorter range than that of rockets. Following is an annual distribution of mortar shell launching attacks:

Distribution of mortar shell launching attacks from the Gaza Strip

Since the beginning of the conflict 4735 mortar shell attacks were executed against Israel. The peak year being 2008 with 912 attacks, despite the Lull that presided since June 19 2008, where the number of attacks was reduced drastically.

Also in 2004 there was a record in this pattern with 882 attacks.

2006 saw a decline of more than 2000 percent in this pattern with only 28 attacks.

Oppositely this year noted a sharp rise in the number of rocket attacks (1247 compared to 286 last year) therefore it appears the mortar shell pattern has been abandoned for the use of rockets.

After that year (since 2007) the use of this pattern was renewed and even increased until 2008, which, as aforementioned, was the peak year.
Throughout 2009, 197 mortar shell attacks were executed, a number significantly lower than the annual average (except 2006) of mortar shell launchings.

Following is an annual distribution of mortar shell launching attacks since 2005

Distribution of mortar shell launching attacks from the Gaza Strip between 2005-2009

4397 mortar shells were launched towards Israel since 2005. The peak year is 2008, with 1668 mortar shells. 2007 also saw a considerable number of mortar shells: 1531, only eight percent lower than the record in 2008.
Throughout 2009 only 289 mortar shells were launched, half of which (135) during the two last weeks of Cast Lead.

Following is an annual distribution of fatalities in mortar shell launching attacks:

Distribution of fatalities in mortar shell launching attacks from the Gaza Strip since the beginning of the conflict.

Throughout the conflict 14 people were killed as a result of mortar shell attacks. The peak year was 2009, when during Cast Lead 5 soldiers were killed as a result of mortar shell launching. 2004 saw a significant number of fatalities as a result of this pattern: 4 fatalities, and in 2008 – three. 57 percent of all fatalities (eight) are security personnel, and 43 percent are civilians, out of which 4 are Israelis and 2 are foreigners killed in a mortar shell-attack in the Gaza Strip in 2004.

In high trajectory shooting attacks (rockets and mortars) 1396 people were wounded during the conflict. The peak year was 2008 when 464 were injured in high trajectory shooting attacks. 2007 also saw a considerable number of casualties in this pattern – 343 people.
