Monthly Summary – May 2010
May has shown an increase in the number of attacks: 63 attacks as opposed to 56 in April. This increase is salient especially in the Gaza Strip (32 attacks as opposed to 25 in April) and in the area of Jerusalem (14 attacks as opposed to 6 in April), whereas the extent of attacks in the Judea and Samaria continues to decline (17 attacks as opposed to 25 in April). The number of attacks in May in the Judea and Samaria is the lowest since the beginning of 2010.
 

While numbers of attacks are increasing, an increase in the number of terror victims is also protruded: 6 Israelis injured in May (3 in shooting attacks and 3 in Molotov cocktail throwings in Jerusalem), as opposed to one injured in April. 


 

 

Data regarding casualties in terrorist attacks
Throughout May 6 Israelis were injured (2 citizens and 4 members of the Israeli forces) in terrorist attacks as opposed to one injured in April 2010 (as a result of a stone/object throwing in Samaria).
Following is a detailing of injuries in May:

  • May 14 – two citizens in a shooting attack in Judea.
  • May 21 – a member of the Israeli forces injured in a shooting attack in the Gaza Strip border area.
  • May 29 – a member of the Israeli forces injured as a result of a Molotov cocktail throwing in Jerusalem.
  • May 31 – two members of the Israeli forces injured as a result of a Molotov cocktail throwing in Jerusalem. 


Data regarding terrorist attacks in May 2010
May has shown an increase in the number of attacks as opposed to April: 63 attacks in May as opposed to 56 in April.

The increase in the extent of attacks is salient in the Gaza Strip (32 attacks as opposed to 25 in April) and in the area of Jerusalem (14 attacks as opposed to 6 in April), whereas a decrease is seen in the Judea and Samaria (17 attacks as opposed to 25 in April).
 
It should be noted that the decrease in the extent of Judea and Samaria-based attacks continues and numbers are the lowest since the beginning of 2010: 17 attacks as opposed to 25 in April, 62 in March, and 37 in January and February.

Following is a regional distribution of attacks: 17 in the Judea and Samaria (as opposed to 25 in April), 32 in the Gaza Strip (as opposed to 25 in April), and 14 in Jerusalem (as opposed to 6 in April).

In Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem – most of the attacks in May (28 out of 31) were in the form of Molotov cocktail throwings (in April: 27 out of 31).

 

 

Monthly distribution of attacks according to regional profile
Following is a distribution of attacks in May according to regions:

The Gaza Strip – 32 attacks (as opposed to 25 last month): 13 rocket launchings, 4 mortar shell launchings, 12 small arms shootings, one AT launching, and 2 explosive devices.

The Judea and Samaria and Jerusalem – 31 attacks (similar to April): one explosive device, one shooting attack, one object/stone throwing, and 28 Molotov cocktail throwings (14 in Jerusalem). 


 

High-trajectory launchings from the Gaza Strip
Throughout May 2010, 14 rockets and 7 mortar shells were launched  towards Israel (in 17 attacks) as opposed to 5 rockets and 18 mortar shells in April (in 15 attacks).
